A Wolf Speaks His Mind

I am known as Master Isengrim, a proud wolf well known to you all. Today I would like to speak to you myself and perhaps break a few of the prejudices that surround me.

People say that Little Red Riding Hood fell victim to me, that I tore her apart. Yet I mean no harm to you humans, whether you walk through the forest or across the open heath.

In the woods, I enjoy the warmth of the sun. When I see hikers passing by, I watch them only with curious eyes from a safe distance. Meanwhile, my playful pups run freely through the clearings and quench their thirst from the cool waters of a nearby stream.

Only in times of great need do I sometimes attack sheep. I know that many people do not approve of this. But on such days, hunger has driven me to desperate measures. I do not wish to cause grief to those who care for these animals.

Most of the time, however, I behave peacefully and respectfully around human livestock. If you protect your animals with sturdy fences, I can admire them from afar and continue on my way.

The deer and stags that usually make up my meals are often old, weak, or sick. From time to time, I may even bring down a wild boar in the forest. Such is the way of nature. Afterwards, I enjoy my meal and lick my paws with great satisfaction.

This is part of nature's cycle. By playing my role, I help maintain the balance of life. Things are rarely only black or white, and I know that discussions about wolves often become heated.

Yet even among humans there are those who deceive others — wolves in sheep's clothing, as you like to say. Sometimes I am called mankind's friend, at other times mankind's enemy. But in truth, we are all united within the same natural world.

All of us want what is best for both people and animals. All of us wish to live in freedom. Not everything is purely good or purely bad. Humans and wolves share the same right to exist.

But please do not try to tame me with food and believe that doing so makes you safe. If that happens, I lose the natural caution that keeps both you and me protected. I would rather remain loyal to my own family and to the instincts nature has given me.

Let us continue to keep a healthy distance from one another, as surely as I am a wolf from nose to tail. In the future, we will need to share the same landscapes and territories. If we do so with respect, we can all enjoy the beauty of nature in peace.

And I promise to respect you humans as well. Then there will be no reason for you to hunt me or fear for your lives because of me.
